Implants

A dental implant is a substitute for a natural tooth root made from titanium which is placed into the socket of the missing tooth. The implant makes contact with the bone in the jaw which will over time grow around the implant. The structure which the implant will support can then be constructed. This could be a single tooth a bridge or even a full denture.

Dental implants are an ideal option for people in good general oral health who have lost one or more teeth due to periodontal disease or dental injury. Candidates for dental implants need to have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant. A thorough evaluation by your dentist will help determine whether dental implants are right for you.

What is involved in having a dental implant?

Placing a dental implant will require a surgical procedure. This can be done using a simple local anaesthetic. For complex cases general anaesthetic under specialist care may be required.

The implants need to bond (integrate) with the bone after they have been put in. This is for around 3 months in the lower jaw and 6 months in the upper jaw.

If you are having one, two or three teeth replaced, you will have a temporary restoration in the meantime. If you have complete dentures, then these can be worn throughout the healing period once they have been modified after the surgery.

How long will an implant last?

With the right care, an implant should last for many years.

How do I look after my dental implant?

After care is important if you are going to have a long-lasting, successful implant. Your dentist will give you detailed advice on how to look after your implants. Cleaning around the teeth attached to the implants is no more difficult than cleaning natural teeth. However, there may be areas that are difficult to reach and you will be shown methods to help you, using superfloss, interdental bristles and water picks. More frequent visits to the hygienist may be necessary but your dentist will be able to advise you on this.

Can an implant always be used to replace a missing tooth?

That depends on the state of the bone in your jaw. Your dentist will arrange for special tests to assess the amount of bone still there. If there is not enough, or if the bone is not healthy enough, it may not be possible to place implants without grafting bone into the area first.
